Find the Way Home | Chapter 2: The Dream

Mary ate the delicious cherries to calm herself down. Why would she dream of such an awful dream?

The dream went like this:

The clock went “ding-dong-ding-dong” when the time hit noon.

Kelly came back from her school (which was odd because she normally wouldn’t be back until late afternoon).

Mary jumped from her bed to the front door to greet her. Maybe, she was too tiny, as Kelly could not see her and was still waiting for her mum to come to the door.

Mary jumped as high as she could, so Kelly could see her from the sidelight.

“Oh hey, little rabbit,” Kelly said, in a kind voice.

Mary got transported to outside and sat in front of Kelly.

Kelly held Mary up high, then put Mary in her arms.

“Oh, look! That is my teacher, Mr. Conlon,” Kelly pointed at a tall man who was coming towards them.

The man came to Kelly.

“Hi,” He greeted.

Kelly was horrified.

No teacher would mind and greet her before. She would be the one greeting the teachers.

She greeted the tall teacher shyly, “Oh…good afternoon, Mr. Conlon.”

“Mm mm……I love rabbit meat. Can you give this rabbit to me? I will give you extra, free lessons to boost your grades.”

Kelly was shocked and froze in anger.

“You greeted me only because you wanted to eat my rabbit?! NO WAY, THAT’S FOR SURE!!!!!!” She thought angrily.

What she said in actuality, was this: “NEVER! She is MY darling! No one can take her away from me!”

However, it was no use.

The man tickled Kelly, so she laughed, bent and dropped Mary to the ground.

The man held Mary up and giggled.

“Tonight, I shall have a rabbit feast! Oh, how I wish it is night time and dinner already!”

Kelly cried loudly, but no one came to help her.

Then, when Mr. Conlon was holding Mary, Mary pictured her own meat in the middle of the dining table along with other meat. She wanted to get out and be alive but she could not even struggle……

Suddenly, she woke up in fear. The amount of fear made her sweat.

She was so scared.

She was afraid that in reality, Kelly would actually do this to get high marks.

She was frightened when she thought this could become her future and fate.

She felt hopeless, thinking no one could help her and did not want to sleep again.

But the dream did not appear every day, and, well, she was still afraid. You know, if you saw your own meat on the dining table, you would be afraid too. It was a horrible feeling that she could not even begin to describe.

After she had the dream, she would always look at Kelly seriously when Kelly gave her rabbit food. She was terrified that Kelly would let someone take her away some day.

But every time, Kelly would only smile at her, fill up her food bowl and play with her.

When Mary was in the wild with her family, she never had this dream. When she was first in Mrs. Filjune’s home, she had it once every two or three months. It appeared more and more often as time passed.

It was bothersome for her because she was scared all the time after the dream… but the dream never became reality.

Kelly said that the cherries were sweet every time. When she ate cherries, her lovely brown hair would get shinier and brighter. It made her look beautiful.

Mary thought that the cherries had special powers, so this time, Mary stole the cherries to calm herself. The cherries were delicious and sweet enough to calm her nerves.

This was why she stole the cherries on the tea table.
