Find the Way Home | Last Chapter: The Anchantic Forest

Argena, Mary, Carol, Coral and Jake were on their way to Anchantic Forest. They were all tired from hours of travelling. Finally, they arrived at the Anchantic Forest. “This feels really familiar to me,” Mary thought. They stopped and rested under a pretty green tree. Argena tried to find a place they could live in. “Hey guys,” Argena shouted, “There is a bush here and I do not see other animals!” Argena and the rabbits lived in the Anchantic Forest for a year. The twins, Carol and Coral were still living happily together. Jake and Mary made a family. The Anchantic Forest was safe for them. One day, when they were talking to their bush neighbour, Pip, Mary asked, “Do you know a rabbit family called Nita?” Pip told Mary, “No, but I heard that there’s a family called Atin. It’s ‘Nita’ read backwards.” Mary thought, “Maybe that’s my family! But how can I find them?” Suddenly, an old rabbit came looking for Pip. Pip asked the old rabbit, “She is looking for a rabbit f

Find the Way Home | Chapter 10: Deep in the Scary Woodland

Jake became the leader and led them in the woodland. They all followed him and stayed really close to each other. “Stay close and stick together.” Jake jumped slowly and quietly so they would not be found by their predators. They were not scared of Mr. Conlon anymore. Instead, they were cautious about the creatures in the woodland. There were snakes hissing, lizards singing in high pitch, birds screaming, owls cooing… These all scared the little rabbits. Why would a lizard sing and a bird scream? That was because the dark, dark place of the woodland scared them. They sang loudly to try to be less scared. What was wrong with the place? Was there a scary creature living in there? No one knew anything. Parents told their children not to go there, ever. All of the animals in the woodland were staring at the brave rabbits walking in the open. A hedgehog jumped from a brush. “Don’t go to the darkest part of the woodland,” The hedgehog warned, “We have lost too many animal

Find the Way Home | Chapter 9: Finding a Way to Stay Alive

Mary, Jake, Coral and Carol escaped from death and evil’s hand. They were relieved for a moment. But now they had to think about an important question: where could they hide and stay alive? There were rocks to hide behind, but they will not be safe. They were still afraid that Mrs. and Mr. Conlon would come out and look for them. Suddenly, Jake looked around and saw a lot of trees. A woodland! Jake was gratified and started shouting at Mary, Coral and Carol. “A woodland! We could live and hide there!” Mary turned and saw it too, so did Carol and Coral. They all jumped there and looked for places to hide. When all this happened, Lowy, Lucy and Kelly got home with their rabbits missing. They told their parents about it and what Mr. Conlon, the main suspect, said to them. The parents were shocked and called each other. Kelly’s parents and Lowy’s parents met up and went to Lucy’s home. They discussed the events, and later called the principal of the school. The principa

Find the Way Home | Chapter 8: Let’s Go!

It was time to escape from evil Mr. Conlon. They were still discussing about the plan to escape. They thought about the plan targeting Mrs. Conlon. Mary said, “Let’s act so piteous and drive Mrs. Conlon to release us. There is a pet door. That will be perfect!” Jake shook his head, “No. It really will not work. Mrs. Conlon will not do this. She loves rabbit meat too! If she found rabbits piteous and cute, she wouldn’t want to eat us in the first place.” Carol and Coral agreed with him, “Yes. She will not let us go that way.” Mary sighed, “Okay. Then what should we do?” They all went quiet, looked at each other and sighed. Suddenly, Jake had an idea. “We can get away when they are taking us out. They need to take us out at some point, right? We can slip out, and escape through the pet door.” They all agreed this time, “OKAY!” Time went by, dreadfully. The time for the rabbit’s death was near. Mr. Conlon already told his wife the story of how he took the rabbits.

Find the Way Home | Chapter 7: Time to Escape

Mary remembered Mr. Conlon rushing through the hallways with them, and putting them in the boot of his car. She remembered hearing the motor rev as the car started. At the end of the bumpy and fearful trip, the boot opened to Mr. Conlon’s smug and satisfied look. Carol and Coral heard Mary talking about the dream during the ride and were frightened. They had no idea how to get out and neither did Jake and Mary. Mr. Conlon put them down in the kitchen, crammed them all in one cage and discarded the others. He then walked to his wife and said, “You have been so hard working. This is your reward.” He showed his wife the rabbits. His wife was completely shocked, “How did you…” “I will tell you how I got them while we eat dinner,” Mr. Conlon smiled deviously. His wife laughed, “Alright, keep your secret until I finish cooking. When should we prepare their meat and eat them?” “Whenever you are ready. I presume that will be as soon as you can, because I know how keen you are w

One of Us

“Five little birds, sitting on the tree, l-i-v and i-n-g,” young Jason Baileys sang, “One of them falls, one of them calls, other three look, shrug, and fail to bawl.” Maisie looked at the kid, finished her green tea and walked into her house. Jamie sat at the table and looked at her. “Hey,” Maisie smiled. “How are you?” “I had another nightmare last night.” “I’m sure there is a silver lining to everything,” Jamie smiled, “It could be a signal that you are worrying too much?” “Mm…Maybe,” Maisie looked down at her 8 months pregnant belly. Maisie looked out the window. Her neighbours were out, gardening in their already immaculate front yard. “They are at it again,” She said, “The perfect Baileys.” “Are you jealous of them? Because I am looking at perfection and she looks nothing like the Baileys,” Jamie kissed Maisie’s forehead. He then looked into his phone and sighed. “What’s wrong?” Maisie asked. “The phone signal is out again. It has been coming in and out fo

Find the Way Home | Chapter 6: What?!

That morning was a morning filled with rush. Kelly’s school was going to have a pet day and urged students to bring their small pets to school. They didn’t allow big pets that can’t be caged, of course. Or it could become a disaster! Kelly’s school was a weird school in people’s eyes. Her school encouraged students to learn through playing games and had weird events. The weird events included pet day (where students share feelings about their pets, and if they have a small pet, they can bring them in too), stationery day (where students share the old and new use of their favourite stationary)… simply weird events. Mrs. Filjune put Kelly and Jack in this school because it was fun and easy for children, and they will be happy to learn there. So, Kelly brought Mary along for school that morning. Jack wanted to take Mary too, but Kelly was Mary’s owner, so Jack couldn’t take her with him. “This is so unfair!” Jack exclaimed. “A pet is a life and a responsibility. We would like

Find the Way Home | Chapter 5: Will This Really Be Mary’s Fate?

Yes, Mary fainted because the story reminded her of that horrible, horrible dream. The next day, Mary sat quietly in the cage. Kelly smiled as usual, as she arranged Mary’s food with the medicine, then put it in front of her. Mary still sat there quietly and did nothing. She would usually devour the food quickly. Kelly felt like something was wrong but she could not tell what it was. It felt like something was up with Mary, and it was not just about her being sick. Kelly told her best friend, Lucy, about it. Lucy told her, “Maybe it is only YOUR imagination and she is actually completely fine. Well, other than the being sick part.” “But I felt like Mary she…” “Stop imagining. Mary will be okay,” Lucy comforted her. Kelly ate it all up. “It is just a feeling, MY feeling, really,” She thought, “She is okay.” So naturally, Kelly was happy again. When she got home, she found Mary’s food still untouched. Mary stared at Kelly the whole time, while Kelly was doing her

Find the Way Home | Chapter 4: The Story

Mary loved the park where she could meet all her friends. She loved talking to Henry, Jake and Luanda. Lucy, Kelly’s best friend, got two new rabbits: Carol and Coral. Naturally, they joined the squad in the park. They had similar fur patterns and were always referred to as twins. Carol and Coral had a friend who was very old and died last week. “He was hysterical,” Carol said, “He loved to tell crazy stories.” “Yes,” Coral continued her sister’s speech, “But in his stories lied the truth.” Mary asked, “Like?” “A story about a rabbit, a wild rabbit. Once upon a time, there was a wild rabbit. He had a good wife and good children. One day, his child was lost in the forest. Another one of his children went looking for her. But it was too late… The animal centre caught the poor, helpless little rabbit. He was frightened, so he went back home to tell his father. “Papa…sister was caught by the animal centre.” The rabbit lied down hopelessly. Suddenly, he jumped out to find his

Find the Way Home | Chapter 3: A Talk in the Park

It was Mary’s time to go to the park. Luanda and Henry knew about her dream and Henry told Jake about it. When she got to the park, Henry and Jake were hopping towards her. “Are…are you okay? You look very…tired!” Jake asked carefully. He saw that Mary’s fur was not shiny any more. It looked dirty and messy, and Jake was concerned. Mary cried, “Nooooooooooo!!! I…I…had the dream again!” Tears fell from her eyes and bounced to the ground. Jake and Henry were shocked. They never saw Mary cry before. The dream really DID frighten her. Luanda came and jumped beside Mary. She was shocked too. She found Henry and Jake looking at Mary strangely. Luanda shouted, “You two made her cry! Pay for it!” They were horrified, “We…We are only shocked!” Mary sniffled, “It is not their fault. The dream…..the dream, it scared me.” Luanda was angry, “That foolish, stupid and crazy dream? Oh goodness! What the heck!” Jake and Henry were shocked again. Luanda never said that kind

Find the Way Home | Chapter 2: The Dream

Mary ate the delicious cherries to calm herself down. Why would she dream of such an awful dream? The dream went like this: The clock went “ding-dong-ding-dong” when the time hit noon. Kelly came back from her school (which was odd because she normally wouldn’t be back until late afternoon). Mary jumped from her bed to the front door to greet her. Maybe, she was too tiny, as Kelly could not see her and was still waiting for her mum to come to the door. Mary jumped as high as she could, so Kelly could see her from the sidelight. “Oh hey, little rabbit,” Kelly said, in a kind voice. Mary got transported to outside and sat in front of Kelly. Kelly held Mary up high, then put Mary in her arms. “Oh, look! That is my teacher, Mr. Conlon,” Kelly pointed at a tall man who was coming towards them. The man came to Kelly. “Hi,” He greeted. Kelly was horrified. No teacher would mind and greet her before. She would be the one greeting the teachers. She greeted the tall

Find the Way Home | Chapter 1: Out to the Park

There was a rabbit, a wild rabbit, caught last Saturday. She has brown, black and white fur. It was a Monday and Mrs. Filjune brought her home from the animal centre. When Mrs. Filjune was on holiday, she took the rabbit out to the park. Maybe, we should just call her Mary, which was Mrs. Filjune’s daughter’s idea of what the rabbit’s name should be. However, Mary seemed unhappy in the cage. When they arrived, Mary hopped and looked for her friends: Henry and Luanda. “Hello, Luanda. How are you?” Mary said. Luanda smiled. She was a domestic, captive-bred rabbit, unlike Mary and Henry, who were born in the wild. Luanda said in a worried voice, “Why do you look so sad and tired?” “Mrs. Filjune put me in the cage (again)! You know how I hate the cage!!!!!!” Luanda smiled again (you know, a rabbit always ‘smiles’ sweetly). Henry jumped to where Luanda and Mary were. “Why do you guys always talk without waiting for me? Gosh! Never mind, that is okay. My owner is going to
