Find the Way Home | Chapter 1: Out to the Park

There was a rabbit, a wild rabbit, caught last Saturday.

She has brown, black and white fur.

It was a Monday and Mrs. Filjune brought her home from the animal centre.

When Mrs. Filjune was on holiday, she took the rabbit out to the park. Maybe, we should just call her Mary, which was Mrs. Filjune’s daughter’s idea of what the rabbit’s name should be.

However, Mary seemed unhappy in the cage. When they arrived, Mary hopped and looked for her friends: Henry and Luanda.

“Hello, Luanda. How are you?” Mary said.

Luanda smiled. She was a domestic, captive-bred rabbit, unlike Mary and Henry, who were born in the wild.

Luanda said in a worried voice, “Why do you look so sad and tired?”

“Mrs. Filjune put me in the cage (again)! You know how I hate the cage!!!!!!”

Luanda smiled again (you know, a rabbit always ‘smiles’ sweetly). Henry jumped to where Luanda and Mary were.

“Why do you guys always talk without waiting for me? Gosh! Never mind, that is okay. My owner is going to give me a rabbit food cake! The day after tomorrow, tomorrow and tomorrow is the anniversary of my arrival! He said that it will be five years since I arrived at their family,” Henry said happily, proudly and funnily.

Luanda teased, “Your actual friends are really just the food that you have!!!!!!”

Mary and Henry laughed. Luanda giggled too.

An unknown rabbit came.

“Hellooooooooo!”

Henry introduced him, “This is Jake. What a silly Jake!!!”

“So are you!!! Silly Henry. The ones who say others are silly, are silly themselves too. Who are these two ladies?” Jake asked.

Luanda shouted, “Silly Jake, Hello! Or, salutations! I am Luanda and this is my best friend: Mary.”

Mary was a bit zoned out from the caged car ride, so Luanda pushed her a bit.

Mary suddenly yelled, “Salutations, Silly Jake!”

Jake laughed, “Oh, hello Luanda and Mary. Also, my name is Jake not Silly Jake!”

Henry suddenly said, “Oh, it’s time. C’mon Jake, let’s go back!”

Jake said in an apologetic tone, “We have to go. Yes, we. Our owners are friends. That was how we met.”

“Our owners are calling us, let’s go! Good bye Luanda and Mary!” Henry yelled.

“Bye! See you next time!” Luanda and Mary cried.

They saw Henry and Jake disappear in the long grass to find their owners.

“Is Miss Pillion well now? You told me she was sick,” Mary asked.

Ms. Pillion is Luanda’s owner. She had a cold yesterday.

Luanda smiled again, “She is okay now, thank you for your concern. Hey, Miss Pillion is calling me. Bye Mary!”

“Bye, see you next time,” Mary sighed.

She wanted to talk some more, but that dream disappeared. Well, their owners are good friends, so they could always talk every time they go out. Mary hopped back to her owner’s daughter: Miss Filjune, Kelly.

Kelly was walking on a bridge in the park, coming towards Mary. Kelly walked in front of Mary and picked her up.

“My Mary, darling, what is the matter with you? You look so tired!”

Mrs. Filjune came with a bottle of water.

“Let her swim,” She said, “You know your rabbit loves to swim.”

When Mary heard the word ‘swim’, she was gratified. She loves to swim in the shallow water. She loves to be in the water. Kelly took her to a small pond with clean, shallow water. Mary swam freely and kicked the water as she moved around.

After the swim, Kelly wrapped Mary in a towel.

Then, they got home.

Mary was very tired from the exercise, so she went to sleep immediately.

She woke up from some dog’s barking.

She fell asleep again.

The doorbell rang.

Mary struggled, changed her position, and soon fell asleep once again.

Then, she was woken up by noises Mr. Filjune made whilst getting ready for work.

She slept again.

Mrs. Filjune opened the water tap and woke her up once more.

She continued to sleep, wake, sleep, wake, sleep, wake, sleep, wake…

Then suddenly, Mary woke up with fear.

She had a nightmare.

The dream made her dizzy, afraid, bitter……bad feelings.

She had the dream before. The reason for its occurrence remained a mystery.

Mary jumped up to the tea table and looked around. Mrs. Filjune was hanging the clothes, Kelly was playing the piano, Kelly’s brother Jack was doing homework and Mr. Filjune was not home. Mary stole some cherries from the plate on the table and jumped back to her bed.

Kelly finished practicing piano, so she went to the tea table for the cherries, her favourite fruit. Mrs. Miljune bought them for her.

She counted and found some missing.

She screamed, “WHO STOLE MY CHERRIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Mrs. Filjune, Jack and Mary jumped a bit from her sudden yell.

“It must be YOU!” Kelly pointed at Jack.

Jack said, unhappily or even angrily, “I was doing my homework the whole time! Ask mum!”

“Yes. Jackie was doing his homework and didn’t leave his seat,” Mrs. Filjune said in support.

Kelly recounted, “Jack didn’t steal the cherries, mother wouldn’t steal the cherries and father couldn’t steal the cherries. Mmmm……let me see……who is also here?”

Kelly suddenly saw Mary gnawing on something.

Kelly was delighted, “Aha! The thief is here!”

Jack and Mrs. Filjune asked at the same time, “WHO?”

Kelly pointed at Mary.

“It is----Mary the rabbit! She is so n-a-u-g-h-t-y, naughty!” Kelly pretended to be angry.

It is very hard to stay mad at a cute rabbit like Mary.

Mary knew Kelly caught her in the act, but she continued chewing.

“It is yummy, sweet and delicious! I won’t give up this time!” Mary thought.

Kelly understood Mary.

Kelly waved her hand in surrender, and said, “Okay, you can have it. I will ask mum to buy some more next time.”

Then, everyone got back to work.

Mary was still gnawing on the cherry, but she was not happy.

She was full of fear and dread.
