Find the Way Home | Chapter 4: The Story

Mary loved the park where she could meet all her friends. She loved talking to Henry, Jake and Luanda.

Lucy, Kelly’s best friend, got two new rabbits: Carol and Coral. Naturally, they joined the squad in the park. They had similar fur patterns and were always referred to as twins.

Carol and Coral had a friend who was very old and died last week.

“He was hysterical,” Carol said, “He loved to tell crazy stories.”

“Yes,” Coral continued her sister’s speech, “But in his stories lied the truth.”

Mary asked, “Like?”

“A story about a rabbit, a wild rabbit.

Once upon a time, there was a wild rabbit. He had a good wife and good children. One day, his child was lost in the forest. Another one of his children went looking for her.

But it was too late… The animal centre caught the poor, helpless little rabbit. He was frightened, so he went back home to tell his father.

“Papa…sister was caught by the animal centre.”

The rabbit lied down hopelessly.

Suddenly, he jumped out to find his daughter, without listening to his children and wife’s warning.

Then, a man came to him.

“Oh, my lovely rabbit. You are cute and…sorry… yummy! Let me take you home and eat you!” He said greedily.

The rabbit’s wife and children cried. They shouted and ran out. The man saw them too.

“Life is so unfair! Just let me have one tiny rabbit! Ha, ha! Now that all of them come to me willingly…I can have a whole rabbit feast today! How yummy!” He laughed.

Some of the rabbits knew what was going on and ran back to the forest. But the rest of them became a dish on the man’s dining table.

The rabbits who were left behind included the hysterical old friend of ours,” Coral said, as she finished the story.

Mary was shocked. The story was like her dream! She became a dish on the table in the dream, just like the rabbits in the story!

She felt dizzier, dizzier and dizzier and…

She fainted.

She heard screams from Henry, Carol and Coral, and hurried voices of Jake and Luanda…

Mary woke up.

She knew Luanda, Carol and Coral must’ve jumped to Kelly, and jumped as high as they could to get her attention. They must’ve jumped and led Kelly to Mary. Because Mary looked around and realised she was at the Veterinary Hospital.

Kelly was counting the pills for Mary. She looked worried and anxious. She prepared food for Mary and put the medicine inside the food.

Mary knew the medicine was for her and it was good for her. She also knew that the medicine would help with her dizziness and light-headedness. It would help her feel better so she took it all. She knew her fate too – she will be locked in a cage.
