Find the Way Home | Chapter 5: Will This Really Be Mary’s Fate?

Yes, Mary fainted because the story reminded her of that horrible, horrible dream.

The next day, Mary sat quietly in the cage. Kelly smiled as usual, as she arranged Mary’s food with the medicine, then put it in front of her.

Mary still sat there quietly and did nothing. She would usually devour the food quickly.

Kelly felt like something was wrong but she could not tell what it was. It felt like something was up with Mary, and it was not just about her being sick.

Kelly told her best friend, Lucy, about it.

Lucy told her, “Maybe it is only YOUR imagination and she is actually completely fine. Well, other than the being sick part.”

“But I felt like Mary she…”

“Stop imagining. Mary will be okay,” Lucy comforted her.

Kelly ate it all up.

“It is just a feeling, MY feeling, really,” She thought, “She is okay.”

So naturally, Kelly was happy again.

When she got home, she found Mary’s food still untouched.

Mary stared at Kelly the whole time, while Kelly was doing her homework, up until she finished dinner.

Kelly felt like something odd was brewing.

Mary glared at Kelly, because, you know, the dream. She was having the dream every week. She was terrified when she had to go to bed. She thought the dream would attack her almost every time she went to bed. The thought of not being able to control her future scared and shook her to her core.

This time, Mary thought she would have a good night sleep, as she went to bed early.

She was wrong, as you will certainly know.

Really, she had the nightmare again!

The whole dream was the same. She witnessed her meat on Mr. Conlon’s table and she could not get out.

“THAT’S ENOUGH!!!!!!” She thought in the dream…

But it did not end this time. She stayed in the dream, seeing her meat lying on the table.

Mr. Conlon held up some of the meat to his mouth.

He said to his wife, “This rabbit meat is YUMMY!!!”

His wife agreed, “And fatty.”

He nodded his head.

Mary was so angry that she wanted to chop his head off.

Mr. Conlon was going to put another piece of meat into his mouth, when his wife suddenly asked, “How did you get it? It’s hard to buy fresh.”

Mr. Conlon laughed so loudly that even people from the houses across the street could hear him.

“I took it from my student!”

“But…”

“I’ll give her high marks.”

“Oh, you cheeky, cheeky…”

“That’s why you love me!” He smirked.

His wife laughed.

“This will be the ending!!! Please!!!” Mary thought in the dream, again.

She started to sweat in real life.

But not yet, the worst part had yet to happen.

The whole dream suddenly became a dark void. A spotlight landed on Mary.

Mr. Conlon came out of nowhere, yelled and pointed at Mary.

“THIS WILL BE YOUR FUTURE!!!!!! Ha, ha, ha, HA!!!”

At last, Mary woke up.

She found herself drowning in her own sweat. Her breath paced rapidly and her heart banged loudly.

She did not want Mr. Conlon, or anyone, to eat her. She did not want to die. She thought that she needed to stay thin so Mr. Conlon would not want to eat her.

So, she stopped eating.

She did not want Kelly to take her to her school and...

“Will this really be MY fate?” Mary thought helplessly.
