Find the Way Home | Chapter 9: Finding a Way to Stay Alive

Mary, Jake, Coral and Carol escaped from death and evil’s hand.

They were relieved for a moment. But now they had to think about an important question: where could they hide and stay alive?

There were rocks to hide behind, but they will not be safe.

They were still afraid that Mrs. and Mr. Conlon would come out and look for them.

Suddenly, Jake looked around and saw a lot of trees.

A woodland!

Jake was gratified and started shouting at Mary, Coral and Carol.

“A woodland! We could live and hide there!”

Mary turned and saw it too, so did Carol and Coral. They all jumped there and looked for places to hide.

When all this happened, Lowy, Lucy and Kelly got home with their rabbits missing. They told their parents about it and what Mr. Conlon, the main suspect, said to them. The parents were shocked and called each other. Kelly’s parents and Lowy’s parents met up and went to Lucy’s home.

They discussed the events, and later called the principal of the school. The principal acknowledged that and was VERY angry. He scolded Mr. Conlon for as long and as loudly as he could. He fired Mr. Conlon and threatened to stop him from being a teacher altogether. Mr. Conlon admitted to stealing the rabbits and was really embarrassed, guilty and sorry about it. Lastly, the principal asked him where the rabbits were. He said they escaped and he had no idea.

Lowy, Lucy and Kelly heard the news and were both happy and sad. They were happy that the rabbits escaped from him, but sad because they will likely never get to see them again.

Okay, let’s go back to the rabbits now.

Mary, Jake, Carol and Coral were deep in the woodland, finding hiding spots, and making sure they could not be easily found by Mr. and Mrs. Conlon if they came looking for them. When they felt like they were safe, they looked out.

“What a blue sky!” Jake sighed.

He missed Henry and Luanda. Mary missed them too. She started crying.

“Luanda is my very best friend…”

She was deep in sadness.

Carol sighed, “I lost all of my friends in the park too…Luckily I still have my sister.”

Carol looked at Coral with a big smile.

Coral suddenly thought of something, “Carol and I were captive-bred, and that’s why we get to still be together. Now, what?”

Mary said in a serious tone, “You will have to fend for yourself. And eventually, you become a wild rabbit, like me.”

“And me too. I was a wild rabbit before.”

Mary stared at Jake with her big eyes.

“What???? You are from the wild???”

“Yes, I got caught and became a pet when I was only 1 year old. I still have memories of a place like this.”

Mary said, “Ahh.”

Carol and Coral were still very worried.

“We are home rabbits. We cannot suddenly become wild rabbits. We can’t!!!”

Mary sighed but smiled again.

“We will protect you two. Let’s stick together so we won’t get lost and separated. We’ll make sure you are okay.”

Mary smiled so wide that it relaxed Carol and Coral. Jake pointed at a dark, dark place deep in the woodland.

He said, “I think we will be safe there. No one can find us if they can’t see us.”

They were a little bit scared but agreed.
