Find the Way Home | Chapter 8: Let’s Go!

It was time to escape from evil Mr. Conlon. They were still discussing about the plan to escape.

They thought about the plan targeting Mrs. Conlon.

Mary said, “Let’s act so piteous and drive Mrs. Conlon to release us. There is a pet door. That will be perfect!”

Jake shook his head, “No. It really will not work. Mrs. Conlon will not do this. She loves rabbit meat too! If she found rabbits piteous and cute, she wouldn’t want to eat us in the first place.”

Carol and Coral agreed with him, “Yes. She will not let us go that way.”

Mary sighed, “Okay. Then what should we do?”

They all went quiet, looked at each other and sighed.

Suddenly, Jake had an idea.

“We can get away when they are taking us out. They need to take us out at some point, right? We can slip out, and escape through the pet door.”

They all agreed this time, “OKAY!”

Time went by, dreadfully.

The time for the rabbit’s death was near.

Mr. Conlon already told his wife the story of how he took the rabbits. Mrs. Conlon disagreed with his actions, but what’s done was done.

She held a knife and came to the rabbits, ready to kill them and store their meat.

Usually when she is about to kill the rabbits, they seem to be able to sense it and start going crazy. This time, they were unusually quiet.

They were looking at each other, then at her, through the cage door.

Mrs. Conlon felt a bit uncomfortable.

She thought, “What’s wrong with them?”

She went near them and started to open the cage. The uncomfortable feeling grew in her heart. She shook her head and ignored the feeling.

She opened the cage…

Suddenly, the first rabbit slipped from the opening and ran away.

Mrs. Conlon got spooked and dropped the knife.

She shook her head and looked around, but the rabbit was nowhere to be found.

“How could it…” She murmured.

She bent down and picked up the knife.

The uncomfortable feeling did not go away.

She looked up in the cage as she stood up…

All the rabbits were gone.

Yes, ALL were GONE.

She was REALLY shocked.

She thought to herself, “How could it be? How could they run in such a fast pace and disappear? That never happened before!”

She was still thinking about it. She kept shaking her head, puzzled. She thought maybe her husband would’ve saw what happened, but Mr. Conlon was still sitting in the living room watching TV.

She looked at the door and saw the pet door swing.

"Oh! That’s why!"

She quickly opened the door and looked out.

They were gone and they will NEVER come back. She was truly disappointed and worried about telling her husband. She dropped her head down low and walked to Mr. Conlon.

Mr. Conlon heard her coming over and looked up, “Done with them, darling?”

Mrs. Conlon kept her head down and murmured, “They…they are gone…”

Mr. Conlon stood up, “What?”

Mrs. Conlon looked up.

She said, “When I opened the cage, a rabbit slipped out. I got spooked and dropped my knife. How did it do that? It was way TOO fast. I went to pick up the knife and when I stood up, they were all gone. It was like they knew and they planned it. Oh, that sounds so silly… Sorry, darling, I am very sorry…”

Mrs. Conlon looked at the ground again.

Mr. Conlon lifted her face and said, “It is okay, my darling. We can always just get frozen rabbit meat off the market. Then you don’t even have to prepare the meat. I know how messy that could get.”

Mrs. Conlon smiled.

They were soon happy again.
