Workaholic | Screenplay
1 INT. STELLA'S WORKPLACE. DAY.
STELLA types ferociously on her computer at work. Her BOSS comes and looks at her computer screen.
BOSS
Burning that fuel for the next project’s research
report, Stella?
STELLA
Yes, trying hard to meet deadlines. Once I stop
working, it is hard for me to pick it back up.
Stella smiles at her and quickly gets back to work.
Her boss smiles with satisfaction and walks away.
Stella finishes typing and sends it off to her boss.
She sat down and looked at the screen, then the clock.
She gets frustrated from boredom, and starts looking for more unfinished reports.
She types quickly on her computer.
A COLLEAGUE goes near her desk.
COLLEAGUE
Would you like to come out for drinks later?
STELLA
Nah, I should finish all these.
The colleague looks at her computer.
COLLEAGUE
That is not urgent though. Are you sure you
don’t want to come out?
STELLA
Thank you but I am good.
COLLEAGUE
Alright then.
Her colleague shrugs and leaves.
Another day passes.
Stella's colleague looks at Stella's computer.
COLLEAGUE
Stella! That is not even our department’s work!
STELLA
(without looking up)
I know, I just wanted to help them make a draft.
It will lighten the weight on everyone’s
shoulders.
COLLEAGUE
Oh well, have you finished your assigned work
for our own department?
STELLA
Yes, of course.
Her colleague shrugs and walks away.
She suddenly turns back.
COLLEAGUE
You know, our boss might not even promote you,
right? We don’t have any executive positions
right now.
STELLA
Yes, I know. I’m just doing this to help our company
and so that I have something to do in between
projects.
Stella looks up and smiles at her, and quickly gets back to her computer.
2 INT. STELLA'S CAR. DAY.
Stella talks to her car's bluetooth phone system.
STELLA
Yes? Oh, yes I am driving. No, I can’t check the
emails right now, but you can read it out to me.
Stella looks at the road and tries to listen to the content that was read to her.
Suddenly, a kangaroo goes near the road and Stella swerves her car.
Stella hits her head on the wheel and her airbag is not released.
COLLEAGUE (V/O)
Hello?
STELLA
Yes, hello. Sorry I just hit my head on the wheel
while trying to avoid a kangaroo.
COLLEAGUE (V/O)
Are you okay?
STELLA
I think so. What were we saying?
Her colleague gets silent over the phone.
STELLA (CONT'D)
Hello?
COLLEAGUE (V/O)
Stella, please go get your head checked out.
STELLA
Alright.
3 INT. HOSPITAL. DAY.
DOCTOR #1 checks on Stella.
DOCTOR #1
It seems like you had a concussion. It is not
severe, but you should take some rest.
STELLA
Okay.
4 INT. STELLA'S HOME. DAY.
Stella sits at her desk at home and gets a bit fidgety.
She walks around.
She quickly can't bear it and opens her work email to reply to a few of them.
Her boss calls her on the phone.
BOSS (V/O)
Stella, I thought you are off work.
STELLA
Yes, but I just wanted to check the emails.
BOSS (V/O)
Please, take some rest. Didn’t the doctor asked
you to do so?
STELLA
Yes, but I didn’t want to make any excuses for not
working away from the office.
BOSS (V/O)
Please.
STELLA
Okay.
Stella hangs up the phone and stares at the wall.
She looks through her emails and starts typing again.
5 INT. STELLA'S WORKPLACE. DAY.
Stella gets to work, and everyone is shocked.
COLLEAGUE
Stella, don’t you have another week off?
STELLA
Yes, but I couldn’t bear staying at home...
Stella blacks out and faints.
6 INT. HOSPITAL. DAY.
Stella lies in a hospital bed and the doctors look at her case.
DOCTOR #1
Not looking too good. She needs to be hospitalized
until she gets enough rest for her condition.
Stella suddenly gets up and tries to pull her life support away from her arm.
DOCTOR #2
Please, sit back down.
STELLA
No, no, I don’t want more excuses to be off work!
I want to get back to work now!
Stella gets off the bed, slips and hits her head on the bed's side handle.
The doctors quickly pick her up and rush her to the MRI scans.
7 INT. MRI SCANNING ROOM. DAY.
Stella gets her scans done and the doctors look at her.
They see a small phrase embedded in her MRI scan and takes a closer look.
DOCTOR #1
It says, "Let me out, I need to work."
DOCTOR #2
Oh my goodness, what a workaholic.
