One of Us

“Five little birds, sitting on the tree, l-i-v and i-n-g,” young Jason Baileys sang, “One of them falls, one of them calls, other three look, shrug, and fail to bawl.”

Maisie looked at the kid, finished her green tea and walked into her house. Jamie sat at the table and looked at her.

“Hey,” Maisie smiled.

“How are you?”

“I had another nightmare last night.”

“I’m sure there is a silver lining to everything,” Jamie smiled, “It could be a signal that you are worrying too much?”

“Mm…Maybe,” Maisie looked down at her 8 months pregnant belly.

Maisie looked out the window. Her neighbours were out, gardening in their already immaculate front yard.

“They are at it again,” She said, “The perfect Baileys.”

“Are you jealous of them? Because I am looking at perfection and she looks nothing like the Baileys,” Jamie kissed Maisie’s forehead.

He then looked into his phone and sighed.

“What’s wrong?” Maisie asked.

“The phone signal is out again. It has been coming in and out for the past few days.”

“Huh, that’s weird!”

“Yeah, I know,” Jamie shrugged, “Not like we really need it right now anyways.”

Maisie smiled and kissed Jamie.

Maisie woke up from a nightmare. She looked and Jamie was sleeping soundly beside her.

She sighed and walked into the kitchen.

She looked at her green tea cabinet and…

The green tea were all replaced by coffee sachets.

“Jamie!! JAMIE!”

Jamie walked out in a hurry.

“Yes? Are you okay?”

“High caffeine is bad for pregnant women and their babies! Someone is trying to make me lose this child, just like in the dreams…”

“Maisie…”

“Jamie, I am not going crazy!”

Jamie hugged Maisie, “I probably just forgot that I moved your tea elsewhere…”

“And forgot to tell me as well? What if someone is messing with us? What if you forgetting is instigated?”

“There, there now. Let’s go back to bed, okay?”

She saw a light flickering from her neighbour’s house through the window. She started moving closer...

Suddenly, Jason appeared right outside.

“AHH!”

Jason ran away.

She backed up, tried to grab the chair but lost her balance and fell. She started to feel pain.

“Jamie…”

“Maisie!”

He helped Maisie up, then ran out. He left the front door open so he could see Maisie from outside.

He looked down into his phone and there was no signal at all.

“Argh, just when you needed it to work…”

He went and knocked on the Baileys’ door.

Jason looked at him from the side window. His parents stood behind him.

“Hello! Can you please come and help me?”

“One of them falls…”

“Maisie fell!”

“One of them calls…”

“Hello?” Jamie looked at them.

They all looked emotionless and unaffected, even robotic to an extent.

“Other three look...”

Jamie turned around and Maisie wasn’t where he left her.

“Maisie? MAISIE!”

Jamie ran around the house and found Maisie on the bathroom floor with blood coming from behind her head.

“Maisie! Oh no…”

Jamie cried and…

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Five little birds, sitting on the tree, l-i-v and i-n-g,” young Jason Baileys sang, “One of them falls, one of them calls, other three look, learn, yet still fail to bawl.”

Maisie looked at the kid, finished her chai tea and walked into her house. Jamie sat at the table and looked at her.

“Hey,” Maisie smiled.

She looked at the Baileys as they gardened their lawn.

“Do you ever feel like there is something off about them?” Maisie asked.

“I mean, they seem way too perfect… Like they were designed to only react and see good things in life, ignore everything else.”

“Yeah, exactly.”
